2026 Toyota RAV4 Changes a Lot Without Losing the Plot

Quick HighlightsGasoline Engines Dropped Up to 52 Miles EV Range Practicality First Premium Feel Missing

First introduced about three decades ago, the Toyota RAV4 would go on to become one of the best-selling SUVs of all time. Toyota’s winning formula was prioritizing practicality, focusing on getting the basics right while paying little attention to trend-chasing.

For 2026, the Japanese automaker has given the Toyota highly successful compact SUV a massive cosmetic upgrade. It looks a little boxier, more striking, and more aggressive, while still maintaining the signature RAV4 stance. A lot has also changed inside and under the hood, with Toyota ditching all gasoline-only models, fitting a bigger infotainment screen, among other upgrades. Here are the details about the 2026 Toyota RAV4 and why it leaves the last model in the rearview mirror.

Performance: Healthy Bump in Vim

Both the 2026 RAV4 Hybrid and PHEV feature a 2.5-liter inline-four under the hood. While it is the same gasoline engine that powered the 2025 RAV4, the non-hybrid variants did not make it to the latest model year. Previous hybrid models produced 219 combined horsepower, but the new RAV4 Hybrid ups the juice to 236 hp (226 HP with FWD). Meanwhile, PHEV models also receive a bump in output from 302 combined hp to 324 combined hp.

The new Toyota RAV4, much like its predecessor, offers plenty of options. Buyers can choose between FWD and AWD configurations on some hybrid trims, while PHEV models come exclusively with AWD. Previous plug-in hybrid models did not offer the off-road-focused Woodland trim, but it is now available in both Hybrid and PHEV models. Toyota’s GR Sport styling also debuts in the RAV4 lineup for the first time. Hybrid models get an EV Mode for limited low-speed electric driving, while the PHEV can drive up to 52 miles on electric power alone, depending on configuration. Regardless of trim, the RAV4 offers multiple drive modes for specific terrains.

By dropping the gasoline-only Toyota RAV4 models, Toyota is clearly doubling down on efficiency with the new RAV4 lineup. Even the latest Hybrid and PHEV models are expected to deliver better fuel economy than their 2025 predecessors. For example, the latest RAV4 Hybrid Limited trim is estimated to return a combined 41 MPG, while the 2025 RAV4 Hybrid Limited came in at a combined 39 MPG. PHEV models are equipped with a 22.7-kWh lithium-ion battery, helping the SUV to drive up to 52 miles of all-electric driving. In comparison, that is roughly 10 more miles than the 2025 PHEV models offered. Toyota also says the PHEV can charge from 10 to 80 percent in about 30 minutes when connected to a DC fast charger.

Interior: Practical Before Premium

The Toyota RAV4’s practicality-first approach continues in the cabin. It has a decent interior layout that is not particularly exciting, but far from lacking in the essentials. Interior materials, like the SofTex-trimmed seats on lower trims, can feel a little cheap, but given they start below $35,000, we’ll cut Toyota some slack. Higher-end trims with synthetic-suede-trimmed seats look noticeably more upscale, though they’re still not quite at the plush level of luxury-focused compact SUVs. Storage space, however, is quite satisfactory.

Alongside the compartment above the glovebox and other storage areas scattered across the cabin, the center console opens from both sides and can even be fully removed to accommodate larger items. For a compact SUV, the Toyota RAV4 offers decent passenger room, with 41 inches of front legroom and 37.8 inches for second-row passengers. Cargo capacity behind the second row also meets expectations. On trims equipped with 60/40 split-folding rear seats, folding the second row flat opens up roughly 60.6 cubic feet of cargo space.

Tech: Bigger Screens, Fewer Buttons

The 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster that was only available on some 2025 Toyota RAV4 trims is now standard across the 2026 lineup. It also looks better, thanks to a cleaner floating design. Sitting beside it is a 12.9-inch central infotainment touchscreen, although the lower trims make do with a smaller 10.5-inch unit. The new displays bring  improvements over the previous model year’s 8.0-inch and 10.5-inch screen options. However, the system still lacks enough physical HVAC controls, requiring a couple of screen taps to access basic functions.

Toyota makes most safety and driver-assistance features standard across the 2026 Toyota RAV4 lineup. They include Blind Spot Monitor, Trailer-Sway Control, and Lane Change Assist, among others. However, features like rain-sensing wipers, Advanced Park, and the Multi-Terrain Monitor remain limited to high-end trims.

Trims: Six Hybrids, Four PHEV

Of the seven 2025 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid trims, only six make it into 2026 as Toyota dropped the XLE trim. The 2026 PHEV models, however, see two additions with the off-road-focused Woodland and GR Sport trims. While Toyota positions the GR Sport as the sportiest RAV4 trim, we see it largely as a cosmetic upgrade over other PHEV models. The RAV4 GR Sport mainly features GR-specific styling cues such as GR-signature front and rear badging, red interior stitching, and a sportier appearance. Although it gets performance tires and a GR-tuned suspension setup, it still does not drive like a full-fledged Toyota GR car. It is also not significantly quicker than other PHEV trims, as they all share the same plug-in hybrid powertrain.

The Woodland trim, on the other hand, focuses more on outdoor capability with a slightly raised ride height, all-terrain tires, and more rugged styling. We would recommend the PHEV Woodland trim to buyers who prioritize outdoor capability above all else. However, buyers who want a RAV4 that feels more comfortable on the highway without becoming completely useless off the pavement may find better value in the PHEV XSE trim.

Pricing and Competition

Side Profile of the 2026 Toyota RAV4

With a starting price of $31,900, the 2026 Toyota RAV4 costs slightly less than the 2025 model ($32,450 MSRP), despite being a significant upgrade. The RAV4’s fiercest competition still comes from its longtime rival, the Honda CR-V. While both SUVs are similarly priced, the CR-V offers better interior refinement, and  the RAV4 counters with Toyota’s long-standing reputation for durability and strong resale value. The 2026 RAV4 also produces more power than its 2026 CR-V rival.

The Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson are also rivals to the RAV4. The Sportage prides itself on offering some class-leading features in areas like cargo room and horsepower, while the Tucson impresses with its technology-focused cabin. Regardless of the competition, the RAV4 offers the fundamentals most buyers want from a compact SUV. It remains a highly competent mainstream SUV, which explains why it continues to rank among the best-selling SUVs of all time.
