The 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe: A Large SUV That Can Do All

Not often do we get premium luxury and insane power from the same vehicle, but the Chevrolet Tahoe offers everything. Praised by many as an SUV that can do it all, the 2022 Tahoe is roomy enough to accommodate a family, powerful enough to tow a boat, and equipped to keep you safe.

The 2021 model was completely redesigned, and the 2022 model introduced minor changes. Thanks to the lineup of potent engines and other amazing features, the Tahoe is one of the top-selling large SUVs in 2022. What’s the fuss about? Here’s why Global SUV rates the 2022 Chevy Tahoe highly.

Outsized Exterior

The elements of the Tahoe’s exterior may differ depending on the selected trim, but each trim looks bold and imposing. The front profile features a hyper-aggressive face that, in our opinion, presents the vehicle as a no-frills workhorse. While the full-size SUV may not be technically bigger than the Toyota Sequoia, Ford Expedition, Nissan Armada, and other vehicles in the same segment, the physical presence of the Tahoe will leave you feeling as though it dominates its class.

The black grille finish on the lower trims is so-so, but you can move up the lineup if you want more glitz. For example, the High Country trim’s grille has unique bronze accents. Each trim has led headlights on the flanks of the grille, and the hood stands chest-high. With 210.7 inches from nose to tail and 81 inches from left to right across all trims, you may have difficulty telling the difference between each trim until you’re behind the steering wheel.

The lower trims come with 18-inch alloy wheels, while upper derivatives have 20 and 22-inch wheels. The roofline ends in a spoiler, but the rear profile will likely get split opinions. There’s not much happening on the side other than the waistline running the entire length from the headlight to the taillight.

Built To Perform

The Chevy Tahoe’s distinctive design does not come at the expense of power and performance. Right from its inception, the large SUV has been powered by a V-8. The 2022 Tahoe has a standard 5.3-liter motor under the hood, producing 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque. But there’s something else for people who want more power.

A 6.2-liter V8 engine takes higher figures with 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. And there’s an oil-burner, 3.0 turbo diesel engine, which produces the least horsepower (277hp), but matches the 6.2L’s maximum torque (460 lb-ft). All the engine options are powerful enough for all kinds of driving. And they pair with a 10-speed automatic transmission to breathe power into the rear wheels or all wheels, depending on the configuration and trim.

The 7-8 passenger  SUV has six different trims to suit different utility needs. All trims stay true to Tahoe’s classic design and offer decent towing capacity. However, we recommend the Z71 model for off-road adventures as it is equipped with all-terrain tires, an adjustable air suspension, and a two-speed transfer case.

Roomy, Welcoming Interior

If you’re used to mid-size SUVs, the inside of the 2022 Tahoe would feel like acres of space. But its spaciousness is not the only strong suit. The design and quality of materials used are also likely to fascinate you. As expected of a large SUV, the 2022 Tahoe can seat up to 9 people. There’s 25.5 cubic feet of cargo space with all seats in place. Fold down the third row to get 72.6 cubic feet. If that’s not enough for any reason, the second rows can also go down for maximum stowage of 122.9 cubic feet.

With 44.50 inches of front leg room and 42.30 inches of front headroom, the inside of the 2022 Tahoe is comfortable. The figures reduce in the second and third rows, but they are still more comfortable than many SUVs. For example, adults can sit comfortably in the Wayback since the second row slides fore and aft to offer enough flexibility.

While most safety and driver-assist features are accessible via the infotainment touchscreen, there are physical dials and switches on the center stack for anyone who wants to do it the old way. The dashboard is pretty, and every interior part is well-trimmed.

Reliable Tech, Safe Ride

As expected of an SUV of its caliber, the 2022 Tahoe’s infotainment system has many modern features. However, thanks to built-in Google capabilities, it is a stand-alone system that does not require much connection to your phone to function. Depending on the trim, the driver information center behind the screen may be 4.2-inch or 12.3-inch. But all trims have a standard 10.2-inch infotainment touchscreen with an easy-to-use app.

The 2022 Tahoe has more standard safety and driver-assist features than older iterations. Buckle to Drive, Lane Keep Assist, front and rear park assist, and automatic high beams are all standard features. The Tahoe’s impressive build quality combines with its safety features to earn it a 4-star rating in the NHTSA crash tests.

Pricing and Competition

The 2022 Tahoe’s lowest trim (LS) starts at $52,000, while the highest trim (High Country) starts at $72,600. We recommend the RST and Z71 trims because they offer the most value for money.

The Tahoe’s lowest trim costs about $1000 less than its competitor, the 2022 Ford Expedition’s lowest trim. The Toyota Sequoia is another vehicle in the large SUV market sector. It also falls in a similar pricing bracket. While the Tahoe has different engine options, the Toyota Sequoia has only a 381 hp engine which combines with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

The Ford Expedition competes better in power since it has some engine options. Its standard engine churns out 381 hp and 470 lb.-ft of torque. But it also has a high-output engine that delivers 440hp and 510 lb. ft of torque. Like the Tahoe, the Ford Expedition also has a 10-speed automatic transmission.
