A Look At The 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E, And What To Expect In 2023

Calling a wagon-like, all-electric SUV a Mustang may be an unpredicted deviation from everything we know about the iconic nameplate. But the Ford Mustang Mach-E delivers all the performance gearheads would expect of a vehicle with the galloping horse badge on its grille. Not many EVs offer good performance and range like the Mach-E, and the result is impressive sales figures and more demands than the automaker can handle.

A few months ago, Ford halted orders for the 2022 Mach-E, and we expect the 2023 Mach-E in the year’s second half. While we anticipate, here’s everything Global SUV wants you to know about the sold-out EV and what to expect in the future.

An Athletic Traffic-Stopper

Gearheads think of a two-door pony car when they hear the name “Mustang,” but Ford introduced us to a stylish, four-door EV crossover with the Mustang Mach-E. At the front, the windshield line runs into a sloping hood. But the blocked-off grille is likely to steal the show. The rear profile of the sleek crossover features an upright rear end, which houses what looks like a redesigned version of the famous Mustang rear lights. The sporty roofline features a rear spoiler, improving the athletic appearance of the EV. We like the hidden door handles and the cute waistlines on the side profile.

We don’t expect many changes to the exterior design when the 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E hits our road. But if Ford has something more elegant in the works, we’re more than ready to appreciate it.

Stately, Spacious Cabin

The design and quality of materials in the cabin of the Ford Mustang Mach-E sets it apart from some of its rivals. But the all-electric SUV also has enough passenger and cargo space, thanks to the positioning of the battery under the floor. The streamlined dashboard houses a 10.2-inch digital instrument right in front of the driver. The digital gauge displays nav directions, speed, warning, and other essential information. A huge vertical touchscreen dominates the dashboard, which is the infotainment system. Although the touchscreen grants access to most of the infotainment features, there are a few knobs and buttons in the cabin.

The Mach-E has 60 cubic feet of cargo space with collapsed seats and 29 cubic feet when the rear seats are in place. The higher trims offer more exciting features, including customizable ambient lighting, panoramic sunroof, heated seats, leatherette upholstery, and wireless charging. We expect the 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E to offer more standard and premium interior features.

The Mustang Mach-E Is Agile And Powerful

Automakers do not necessarily need to think of V8 engines with large displacements to offer power today. And the Ford Mustang Mach-E is a testament that vehicles can offer heart-pumping power without harming the environment. The crossover comes in four trim levels: Select, Premium, California Route 1, and GT. Depending on the trim and buyer’s preferred configuration, a 70.0-kWh or extended-range 91.0-kWh battery pack powers an electric motor mounted on the rear or both axles.

For the AWD Select trim, the motors combine to deliver 266 hp and 428 lb.-ft of torque, and the SUV can go from 0-60mph in 5.2 seconds. When the motor is mounted on the rear axle, it has a range of 247 miles. The highest and most powerful trim is the GT, which generates 480 hp and 600 lb.-ft of torque, can accelerate from 0-60mph in 3.5 seconds and has a range of 270 miles.

Ford entered the second model year of the Mach-E with the 2022 model. Notable changes compared with the previous year include more useable battery capacity, the introduction of all-wheel drive to the California 1 trim, etc. Perhaps for the 2023 model, Ford will improve the battery capacity and introduce more motor configuration options for some of the trims. Whatever the case, the 2022 Ford Mustang has all it takes to deliver the speed and agility anyone wants from an electric SUV, qualities that qualify it as a police car in New York.

The 2022 Ford Mach-E relies on cutting-edge technology to offer premium infotainment and modern driver-assist features. While sitting behind the wheel, drivers can easily access the vertically mounted infotainment system, a 15.5-inch touchscreen. Ford’s latest Sync 4 system helps the driver use different apps and features and supports over-the-air updates. Standard safety features include traction control, side-impact beams, stability control, etc. For advanced features like automated braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, and emergency braking, the prospective buyer has to opt for the higher trim configurations.

On the outside, the Mustang Mach-E cascades a Pony projection lamp onto the ground when the owner approaches. By touching the illuminated button on the B pillar, the door opens. The SUV can adjust the drive modes, seats, ambient lighting, and other preferences based on previous configurations. Other features include voice recognition, AT&T-powered in-vehicle Wi-Fi hotspot, etc. Nothing to worry about if you forget your keys since the vehicle supports up to four virtual keys, accessible on smartphones.

Pricing And Preferred Trim

While the 2022 Ford Mach-E may not be the cheapest all-electric SUV, it has value for money pricing. Considering performance, quality of materials, and standard features, the Select trim at $43,895 is a reasonable starting price. The GT starts at $61,995, which is not bad either. Some of the optional packages might make you feel short-changed, but most of them are moderately priced.

We expect a slight increase in starting prices when the 2023 Mustang Mach-E is available. The Select may have a starting price of about $44,000, while the GT is predicted to start at about $65,000. However, if it is affordable, we recommend getting the Premium trim as it offers more standard features, a larger battery, and improved performance.
